Have there been cases of WNV in Prince George?
How will I know if I have WNV? If you are concerned you may have symptoms of WNV, call the 24 hour Nurses hot line at 1-866-215-4700
How will I know if WNV arrives in the City? The City will be notified by Northern Health if there is any change in the level of risk. If there is any additional level of risk identified within the City a joint press release will be issued by the City of Prince George and Northern Health.
Should I report dead crows?
Northern Health will coordinate all activities regarding the collection and testing of dead crows. They can be reached at 250-565-2150.
What can I do to protect myself? Prevent mosquitoes from breeding around your home and yard by removing breeding sites. Remember, no standing water means no mosquitoes. Cover up with light-colored clothing that completely covers arms and legs. Reduce time spent outdoors when mosquitoes are active. Use a registered mosquito repellant. Make sure window screens have no holes or gaps. If you don't have screens, keep windows and doors closed between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
What is the City doing to prepare for WNV? The City is working with regional and provincial health authorities to monitor for WNV in BC. The City currently operates a control program for nuisance mosquitoes.
What is West Nile Virus? It is a mosquito borne virus. In nature it is passes between mosquitoes and birds. The usual way for humans to get WNV is through the bite of an infected mosquito.
Most people infected with WNV will experience no symptoms at all. About 20% of those infected will develop flu-like symptoms lasting a week or less.
