Duchess Fenced Dog Park Now Open!

On November 10th, 2011, Prince George's first Fenced Dog Park was officially opened at the new Duchess Park site.  Members of the former Off Leash Advisory Committee were on hand to welcome dogs and their owners to the new Fenced Dog Park:

"Today is a great day for the people and dogs of Prince George" said Kathi Travers, former chair of the Off Leash Advisory Committee.  "Our parks are for everyone to use.  It is up to all of us to make sure that our dogs are under control and to tell those who aren't being responsible to start taking responsibility."

The new Dog Park is fully fenced and accommodates off leash use with a large open area and a granular ring trail around the perimeter, along with a separate fenced area for smaller or elderly dogs.  Both areas are accessed through double gated entries which facilitate easy leashing and unleashing of dogs.  There are also dog waste stations to bag and collect dog waste.  Further developments will include a human/dog water fountain, trees, benches and other site amenities.

Proposed Off Leash Strategies Report

On November 7th 2011, the Off Leash Advisory Committee presented Council with their Proposed Off Leash Strategies report.  This report represents the culmination of the Committee's work and includes recommendations to Council for a proposed Off Leash Program for Prince George.  These recommendations include strategies for off leash policies, physical site requirements, locations, expansion, costs, stewardship, education, partnerships, risk management and monitoring programs.  With the submission and presentation of this report, the Off Leash Advisory Committee has fulfilled their mandate within a limited duration format and has since disbanded as a Committee of Council.

After receiving the Proposed Off Leash Strategies report, Council has directed Administration to review the proposed recommendations and to provide a Report to Council with options on how to proceed on these strategies.  This review is scheduled to occur later this year with a final Report to Council to be submitted in early 2012.
