Recreation opportunities for children and youth with special needs.

Recreation for all! All members of our community should have equal opportunity to participate. This page is designed to help you locate recreational services that welcome children of various abilities.

Recreational Programs

Swimming

The P.G. Aquatic Centreand Four Seasons Leisure Poolprovides accessibility features ensuring customers with disabilities are not inhibited from an enjoyable pool experience.   Care providers are admitted into the facility free of charge when in the accompaniment of a customer with special needs. 

Each facility is equipped with large changing facilities, water wheel chair and chair lift providing uninterrupted pool access.  The P.G. Aquatic Centre provides additional change room features for customers with special needs ensuring easy pool access and an enjoyable aquatic experience.  For more information on our specific special needs features please call 250 561-7787.

Adapted Aquatic Sunday Swim
An Active Lifestyle = Improved Quality of Life!

The Aquatic Division in partnership with Red Cross offers a free swim on Sunday mornings at Four Seasons Leisure pool.  This swim is free for anyone who has a disability and their immediate family.  The free Sunday swim runs October – May from 10:00am – 11:30am.

Skating

For children who are clients of the Child Development Centre, contact Angela Neath at 250.563.7168.

Wheelchair Basketball

For youth and adults, September to April, call Pat Harris at 250.563.6942.

Bocce

(Similar to lawn bowling) for children, youth and adults with a physical disability, throughout the winter contact Judy Dix at 250.563.6749.

Wheelchair Curling

For youth and adults, from September to April. Please call Joe Rea for more information: (home) 250.962.8470 or (work) 250.962.3704.

Therapeutic Horeseback Riding

For children, youth and adults, from May to October. Contact Barb Warkentine at 250.962.5082.

Skiing

The Disabled Skiers of BC offer a program at the Purden Ski Village on Highway 16 east. For more information contact Joan Lasure at 250.564.6293.

The Prince George Family Y

Offers many programs for children and youth with special needs. Call 250.562.9341.

More Information

Did you know that any person assisting an individual with special needs who needs support is admitted free of charge to City recreation facilities? This does not include a personal or rehabilitation trainer.

Program and recreation leaders at both the Family Y and the Child Development Centre have participated in specialized training to ensure their programs are accessible by all children and youth, regardless of ability.
