Prince George Open Data Catalogue
As part of its commitment to embrace the concept of open access to public sector information, fostering digital innovation and improving service delivery, the City of Prince George is taking bold steps to provide, at no charge, its digital mapping data and products designated as being routinely available to the public (as per Bylaw 8250.pdf).
The City of Prince George, like many other government agencies, is moving to harness the energy and involvement of citizens, community-based organizations and private sector. The City recognizes that the Internet is the public space of the modern world, and through it, the City of Prince George now has the opportunity to better understand the needs of its citizens and become more effective, transparent, and relevant to their lives. Information becomes more valuable as it is shared, less valuable as it is hoarded. Open data promotes increased civil discourse, improved public welfare, and a more efficient use of public resources.
As part of the City’s open data approach, the initial focus will be on its Geographical Information System (GIS) data, used to build our PGMap application. The City of Prince George's Open Data Catalogue can become “the data source” for our citizens, organizations and private sector as we add more datasets, and in possibly a greater variety of formats.
