Between the years 1998 and 1999, the City of Prince George conducted a pilot project, which involved the recycling of approximately 15,000 tonnes of sand, which had been swept from City streets. While there were some financial savings with this process, however, it was discontinued when it was considered that the process compromised the City's air quality.

The winter sand has some very fine soil particles called silt mixed with the sand. We spray water on a street before we sweep to help pick up the fine soil and keep the dust down. Unfortunately the sweepers cannot pick up all the sand and fine soil which is usually washed off the street when it rains.
