Are taxes being increased because staff/council gave themselves raises?

In accordance with Bylaw No. 8414, Mayor and City Council do not decide their own wage, benefits, or reimbursement of eligible expenses.

By the last year of a Council term, the Advisory Committee on Council Remuneration will conduct a review of Mayor and Councillor remuneration, benefits, and expense reimbursement in comparison to peer municipalities. The committee will then provide recommendations in a report to Council.

Wage increases and benefits for unionized City staff are set by collective agreements negotiated between the City and the unions that represent City staff.
