FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Prince George, B.C. – The City of Prince George shares ongoing community concerns relating to the encampment at Millennium Park and continues to closely monitor the property.

In June, the City and the Province of British Columbia entered into a Memorandum of Understanding regarding supports for the unhoused in Prince George, through which partnership the City committed to supporting the Province’s work, including with responding to encampments.

The City understands that the Province is connecting with unhoused individuals presently occupying Millennium Park and is working to identify appropriate alternate shelter and supports, including by working in collaboration with Indigenous and community partners.  The City, RCMP and the Fire Department have communicated to the Province that the encampment at Millennium Park is a serious health and safety concern which must be addressed on an urgent basis.

Once available sheltering options for individuals presently at Millennium Park have been identified, Council will consider the City’s next steps to address the property.

Given the grave concerns for the safety of individuals in and around the encampment, the City understands that the Province is working quickly with focused and coordinated efforts to facilitate a prompt resolution.
