FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Prince George, BC – Through a newly established Fact Check page, the City endeavors to correct misinformation, disinformation, and provide detailed information on issues important to Prince George citizens.

The page will seek to correct or clarify information found on other public sites as well as provide a tool for residents to submit questions. Residents searching for answers to questions about how local government works can now send their enquiries directly to the City through the new online fact check feature.

Staff will select questions from the submissions or pick current hot topics to address and provide thorough responses, supported with data and reports where appropriate, on the page. Some questions will receive a response directly to the person who submitted it.

Residents can also subscribe to the City Fact Check news category to receive updates by email.

Some municipalities in Canada have launched similar fact check platforms and features (such as the City of Welland’s Fact vs. Fiction site) to demystify local government’s inner workings and to provide fulsome explanations of complicated concepts like property taxes. Or the City of Kelowna’s For the Record page used to clarify media stories or letters to the editor.  Fact check features also serve as a way to combat online misinformation and disinformation by providing answers supported by facts, documents, and other materials.
