FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Prince George, B.C. – For the third year in a row, the City of Prince George has received funding from the Government of B.C. to establish an emergency reception centre ahead of the upcoming wildfire season.
The centre is made up of five trailers where evacuees can register for emergency support services and recover after traveling to Prince George as well as a washroom facility.
One of the trailers will once again act as a cultural activity location for Indigenous communities to use as a flexible space – whether that’s supporting their own emergency operations centre, a space for Chief and Council to operate out of, or as a gathering place for their communities.
“The trailers were initially introduced by the province as a pilot program in 2024 and it has largely been a success. The location does have some challenges, particularly at times when there are big events happening at Exhibition Park through the summer,” said emergency programs manager, Tanya Spooner.
“Prince George has played a key role in hosting evacuees during the summer months since 2017, so having a dedicated space for people to come to is critical to our emergency response. City staff continue to advocate to the province for a permanent location that will better serve members of our northern communities.”
The emergency programs team includes 24 emergency support services representatives that work out of the emergency reception centre to support evacuees during evacuation events. The trailers are located behind the Kin Centres, between the ice oval and the horse paddocks.
