Empty storefront permit pilot

Council postponed a discussion on a notice of motion proposing a pilot program for the C1 downtown zone that would allow vacant ground floor commercial spaces to allow various uses such as art studios, small retail, temporary food uses and more, for up to 12 months without rezoning.

The item will be returned for discussion at the September 3 council meeting.

The notice of motion also directs staff to provide a report before the last quarter of the pilot project on outcomes, including business activity, community engagement, and occupancy rates, with recommendations for improvements or city-wide expansion.

July building permit summary

Council received a building permit and development permit summary for July with 43 permits issued for the month. The report includes all residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional permits, and the estimated total construction value of each development.

The July total is made up of five commercial/industrial permit and 38 residential permits, worth a combined total of $30.6 million. 

The year-to-date total as at the end of July is 238 permits worth a combined $214 million. The year-to-date total for the previous year 2024 was 249 permits totaling $198 million.

Final bylaw reading and adoption

Council granted final reading and adoption of two bylaw amendments. One of them was in relation to the Prince George Heritage Commission, which has been amended to increase the number of members from nine to 12.

The other bylaw adopted was in relation to a rezoning of a property on Turner Road from single residential to multiple residential; to facilitate two additional units on the property.
