Presentation from Downtown PG

Council was presented the annual report from the Downtown Prince George Business Improvement Association. Downtown PG, who are celebrating 25 years of service in 2024, highlighted their commitment to improving and promoting downtown.

Council also approved the 2024 budget for Downtown PG. The association operates under the Community Charter and a bylaw adopted by Council, with the current bylaw due to expire in March 2025. The association have asked Council to consider a 10-year term from 2025 to 2035 in their bylaw renewal proposal.

Annual reports on show

Council received presentations from staff on the 2023 Annual reports from the City of Prince George, Tourism Prince George and the Prince George Public Library.

There were plenty of positives highlighted in each report, with tourism showing the Municipal & Regional District Tax (MRDT) revenue was the highest it has been in the last five years.

The library also showed that yearly visits were up for 2023, with a total number of 185,503 visits, up from 143,469 in 2022.

Town hall follow up report

Council received a report following on from the Community Safety Town Hall which was held on May 28, and the facilitated workshop which was held on June 11.

The report provided council with several recommendations primarily focused on the Lower Patricia Boulevard Encampment.

Actions including making the boundaries of the encampment clear and adding fencing, the reinvigoration of the Community Safety Hub and meetings between local government partners were all approved.

Additional recommendations for planning bi-annual town halls and meetings with BC Housing and Northen Health were also passed.

May building permit summary

Council received a building permit and development permit summary for May with 33 permits issued for the month. The report includes all residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional permits, and the estimated total construction value of each development.

The May total is made up of eight commercial/industrial permit and 25 residential permits, worth a combined total of $41.5 million. The month continued the strong start to the years for permits.

The year-to-date total as at the end of May is 163 permits worth a combined $140 million. The year-to-date total for the previous year 2023 was 125 permits totalling $62 million.
