Council Media Release
The Council meeting yesterday was jam packed with really good information on what is happening in our community.
- Annual reports from the following organizations were received by Council. Have a look at their detailed reports on our agenda. This is impressive work done by all for the benefit of our community.
- Downtown Prince George
- Northern Sport Centre (did you know the City of PG is a founding partner and contributes $$$ every year to its operations to keep fees low?)
- City of PG
- Tourism PG
- PG Library
- Council approved a staff request to submit a bid to co-host the 55+ BC Summer games in 2026 with the City of Quesnel. We seem to be pretty good at hosting large events so that will be nice. And FYI – have you volunteered to help at the BC Summer games next month? You really should. It will be an amazing event and we really need lots of volunteers to make our city shine.
- An independent committee made several recommendations regarding council remuneration to take effect next year with the new council. Council approved 4 out of 5 of the recommendations:
- After 2 years without a pay increase the pay for Council will increase in 2023 by 3.5% and in 2024 by 3.5%. The mayor will receive a 1% increase in each of those years.
- A text amendment to the bylaw to specify which quarters are used for the average annual percentage wage adjustment comparison to the Human Resources and skills Development Canada report.
- Councillors who opt into the City’s extended health benefits program will have 50% of the premium paid for (about $80 a month).
- Councillors can be reimbursed up to $40 per meeting for babysitting costs
- Rejected: a vehicle allowance was not approved.
- And something that always gets people excited is the SOFI report. This is the Statement of Financial Information that every municipality in BC publishes in June every year. It is a list of every wage, grant, and contract the City paid in 2021 that is over $75,000. D11 on the agenda. Enjoy.
There were also rezonings and bylaw changes and a few other bits of interesting things.
All of the reports associated with the June 28, 2021 Council meeting are posted with the agenda on the City website.
