Jumpstart Multisport Court Project Capital Budget 2022
- Council approved the proposed $475,000 budget for the City of Prince George’s contribution to the Jumpstart Multisport Court project.
- The project is a partnership between the City of Prince George and the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charity to build a new outdoor accessible and inclusive recreation facility in the community.
- The “multisport court” is a configurable outdoor space that can accommodate a number of different sports in one location and will include accessible equipment and layouts.
- The City’s financial commitment of $475,000 will go towards site preparation work. Jumpstart Charity’s $950,000 contribution will cover construction services, equipment, and materials through its contractor.
- The City’s contribution comes from reserve provincial grant money awarded several years ago.
- Upon finalizing the gift agreement between the City and Jumpstart, initial work may start this fall with the facility’s final completion sometime in 2023.
Land Area at Base of Cranbrook Hill and Between 18th Avenue and Ferry Avenue (“Ginter’s Meadow”)
- Council directed Administration to include consideration of the request to remove the proposed Massey Drive and Foothills Boulevard road extensions and designate “Ginter’s Meadow” from 18th Avenue to Ferry Avenue as Parks and Open Space, as part of the review and renewal of the Official Community Plan (OCP) in 2023.
- A review of the OCP is scheduled for 2023 and involves extensive community engagement on all aspects of the plan including density, traffic planning, and green spaces.
- Amending the Official Community Plan requires an amending bylaw, which addresses the content of the Plan and is presented to Council with recommendations for consideration. A Plan amendment is a public process that involves a public hearing held prior to the third reading of the amending bylaw.
North Nechako Residents Group Request to have Greenbelt Zoned P1
- A residents group requested Council to zone 40 acres of riverfront land as a park.
- What the neighbourhood refers to as “Birdsong Park” is currently zoned as “AG” (greenbelt), a protected zone that doesn’t allow tree cutting or substantial development and is owned by the City. A redesignation to P1 would serve to define the area as a park.
- Redesignating the area will require an Official Community Plan amendment and public consultation to redesignate it as Parks and Open Space.
- Council directed Administration to proceed with steps required to apply to redesignate the land as P1 parkland from AG greenbelt through an Official Community Plan amendment and rezoning bylaw amendment.
