FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Prince George, B.C. – On the final day of the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) convention in Victoria, Premier David Eby announced that Prince George has been identified as one of two new locations for involuntary care facilities to support people facing complex mental health and addictions challenges.

Along with Surrey, Prince George will host new facilities that will provide a total of 100 additional involuntary care beds across the province. Premier Eby noted that existing buildings have been identified for these sites, allowing them to be operational more quickly.

Prince George City Council has been advocating for this type of facility for several years. The issue was a central focus in Council’s meeting with Premier Eby on September 25.

“We are committed to our role as a regional service hub, and today’s announcement will help ensure people with long-term, concurrent mental health and addictions challenges can access the care they need,” said Mayor Simon Yu.

“This does not solve all of the challenges we are facing, but it is certainly a step in the right direction. A secure mental health and complex care facility has been the ask from this Council for a number of years. Seeing the provincial government commit to this today demonstrates the importance of partnerships between all levels of government.”

City Manager Walter Babicz welcomed the announcement, noting that it was one of the most significant topics of discussion at this year’s convention, along with bail reform.

“There has been a tremendous amount of advocacy work on this file, and we have consistently pushed for a site in Prince George to serve as the regional hub for northern B.C.,” Babicz said.

"This facility will play a crucial role in meeting the needs of individuals who are struggling with mental health and addiction issues in our community and the broader region.  We are pleased to see this progress."

UBCM provides a unified voice for local governments across British Columbia, developing policies and strategies to address pressing issues. The annual convention features workshops, networking opportunities, and resolution sessions.
