Prince George, B.C. – The City of Prince George starts demolition of the former Knights Inn Motel located at 650 Dominion Street on August 10.
Demolition is expected to continue until late October, with site grading and sidewalk reconstruction planned for spring 2027. Construction will take place from Monday to Friday between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., as per the City’s noise bylaw. Businesses and residents nearby can expect some temporary disruptions during the work period, including:
- Temporary sidewalk closures along 6th Avenue and 7th Avenue from August 10 to late October.
- Temporary road closures around the property with traffic control in place.
- Closure of the Dominion Street east side sidewalk between 6th Avenue and 7th Avenue until spring 2027.
- Construction noise, dust, and vibration during the tear-down period. Dust will be minimized through watering, and hazardous material abatement will be monitored closely.
Nearby properties have received a formal notice of the demolition work. Once the project is complete in 2027, future use of the site will be considered through the Civic Core District Plan. The total project budget is $1.4 million, which includes a $450,000 contribution from BC Housing for the demolition.
Background
The City purchased 650 Dominion Street in October 2023 to ensure the future use of the property aligned with the Civic Core District Plan.
The decision to purchase the property was made in partnership with BC Housing, as the organization agreed to sign a two-year lease, pay the 24-month lease fees of $1.134 million up front, and contribute $450,000 for future demolition. BC Housing leased the site and provided 44 rooms of supportive housing for people living outside or in emergency shelters until July 2026. All occupants have been relocated to other forms of housing.
