FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Prince George, BC - The 15-year lease agreement between the City of Prince George and the College Heights Community Association to operate a new Malaspina daycare under Kool Cats Family Care has been approved.

Kool Cats Family Care have taken occupancy of the new building with children starting from July 10 and a formal grand opening scheduled for September.

The Malaspina daycare is one of three facilities funded by the ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund and the Union of BC Municipalities Childcare Space Creation Fund. Both sources provided nearly $12 million to the City of Prince George for use in developing a total of 228 new childcare spaces on three sites. The other two daycares are the YMCA Park House and Learning Centre on 6th Avenue and Tsulh’cho/Huckleberry Daycare on Dagg Road.

Kool Cats Family Care will feature 83 spaces:

  • 24 spaces for infants and toddlers.
  • 25 spaces for children aged 30 months to school age.
  • 24 spaces for school-aged children.
  • 2 classes of 20 preschool children each on a part time basis.

Its operator, Kool Cats Child Care, has experience providing childcare services for 28 years.

Spokesperson for Kool Cats Family Care, Jean Petrovic, said they are excited to be getting set up in the new building and looking forward to a busy few weeks.

“We know a lot of people have been waiting for this new center to open, and we’re excited to get children in there enjoying the new space,” she said.

Mayor Simon Yu said he is pleased to have these extra daycare facilities opening up in our city “as we know it has been hard on parents and caregivers to secure places for kids.”

“We wish all the children embarking on their start at this new facility all the best and we’re so glad to have partnered with the College Heights Community Association on this,” Mayor Yu said.

The Prince George Native Friendship Centre, who have been coordinating the new  Tsulh’cho/Huckleberry Daycare on Dagg Road, have confirmed the building works are nearly complete, with the opening date for that center scheduled for later this year.
