FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Prince George, B.C. – One year has passed since the provincial government introduced the Housing Target Order (HTO) under the Housing Supply Act for municipalities in B.C., and the City of Prince George is excited to share that it has exceeded its year one target.

The City’s year one target was 273 net new housing units from August 1, 2024, to July 31, 2025. During this time, 284 units were completed, representing 104% of the year one goal. Net new units are defined as new units that have been issued final occupancy within the reporting period, minus housing units lost through demolition.

The HTO mandates the completion of at least 1,803 housing units in Prince George over five years, from August 1, 2024, to July 31, 2029. The HTO also provides guidance on unit size (bedrooms), tenure (rental or ownership), affordability (market or non-market), and supportive rental units.

“The City is very happy the current permitting process supported us in exceeding our target for year one, but it doesn’t stop there,” said planning and development director, Deanna Wasnik. “We’ll continue making improvements to ensure that we can maintain progress towards our five-year target. There are more than 1,100 net new units projected through approved permits, and we look forward to seeing them become available for residents in our community.”

The City has implemented various initiatives over the past year, including temporary and supportive housing projects in partnership with BC Housing, land-use process improvements and permitting software upgrades to reduce processing times and streamline approvals, and the Official Community Plan update which focuses on increasing density and housing diversity.

City Council will receive the HTO progress report at its meeting on Wednesday, September 3 at 6 p.m.
