Prince George, B.C. – Representatives from Jiangmen, China, visited Prince George this week to tour the community and consider establishing a sister city agreement.

Sister city agreements are formal partnerships between municipalities in different countries that support:

  • economic development and trade
  • cultural and educational exchange
  • tourism and international collaboration

A sister city agreement does not create an automatic financial obligation.

Prince George has historical ties to the Chinese community, including the contributions of early Chinese residents who helped shape the region’s development through railway construction, business activity, and community building. Their legacy remains part of the historical foundation of Prince George and continues to give meaning to renewed relationships with Chinese communities today.

The delegation visited local facilities and landmarks, including City Hall, the University of Northern British Columbia, Northern Lights Estate Winery, and Canfor. Discussions focused on Prince George’s regional strength, economic development opportunities, education, industry, and future areas of cooperation.

“We are honoured to host Mayor Wu Xiaohui and the delegation from Jiangmen in Prince George,” said Mayor Simon Yu, “the last time representatives visited our community was in 2013, and a lot has changed since then, particularly in our education, industrial, and economic sectors. This visit provided an important opportunity to reconnect, exchange information, and assess the potential benefits of formalizing an official partnership. It is about creating a framework for respectful dialogue, strategic cooperation, and future opportunities.”

Officials from the City of Prince George and Jiangmen have been building a relationship since 2010. Although a formal sister city agreement has not been finalized, a memorandum of understanding was signed in 2012 to advance friendly cooperation and focused on economic development, education, and institutional exchange.

If a sister city agreement is proposed following the visit, it would be presented to Council for future consideration.
