FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Prince George, B.C. – The City of Prince George launched a new survey today to understand the community’s needs and preferences regarding public washrooms downtown.

In September 2025, Council directed staff to seek resident feedback to inform future decisions about public washroom access. At that meeting, Council received a report outlining current conditions, cost estimates, lessons learned from other municipalities, and offered potential approaches to improve access. Suggestions included:

  • A staffed washroom at Canada Games Plaza
  • A durable, single-occupancy, standalone structure such as a Portland Loo
  • Washroom access delivered through a partnership with a downtown service provider
  • Integrating a year-round public washroom into an existing civic facility

Residents are asked to provide feedback on the proposed suggestions, identify priority areas for downtown public washrooms, and share their views on funding and cost considerations. Council will consider the feedback received later this spring.

Completed surveys must be submitted by March 2. The survey is available on the City website or physical copies are available at City Hall.

Background

Access to public washrooms in downtown Prince George has been discussed for several years, driven by ongoing concerns about availability, safety, and maintenance. The City has explored this issue through cost estimate reporting, consultations with downtown service providers in 2018, 2022, and 2025, and a 2018 survey with people who experience homelessness and rely on downtown services. Together, this work has highlighted limited washroom access outside business hours and the growing strain on service providers who currently fill this gap. More details are available on the downtown public washroom survey project page.
