Children in the North tend to be less healthy than others in BC (Health Status Report on Child Health 2016). When we compare the health of children in Northern BC to the rest of the province, the picture is concerning. Lifelong health and wellness are strongly influenced by the contexts of people’s lives: their families and communities, the resources available to them, and a sense of connectedness with their peers, their family and their community.
Positioned at the confluence of rivers, highways and railways, Prince George is defined as the hub city for northern health care, social services, international trade, manufacturing, education and research, retail and culture. The Indigenous community is the segment of the community that is growing at the highest rate, the largest proportion is youth. Of particular concern in Prince George is the health of children at Nusdeh Yoh Indigenous Choice School. It had a student population that was one of the most vulnerable in the Province (Ministry of Education).
