Join us for a full day of hands-on, in-person learning and connection. You'll learn about Vantage Point including the BC Non-profit Network, free resources, education and consulting services, and take part in two interactive, practical sessions designed to support your organization and leadership.

Morning Session: Board Responsibilities, including Board Role in Fund Development

An effective and engaged board has clarity around roles, responsibilities, and performance, aligns its work with organizational values and vision, and knows how to contribute to fund development beyond attending meetings or making direct asks. This half-day session covers the essentials of non-profit board roles and responsibilities, then builds on that foundation to explore the board's role in fund development. Through interactive discussion, you'll clarify core governance responsibilities, explore the landscape of non-profit revenue, and unpack the board's role in building a culture of philanthropy.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

1. Describe the duties and responsibilities of non-profit board members and explain the differences between a governance-only board and a working board.
2. Explain the three modes of non-profit governance: fiduciary, strategic, and generative.
3. Articulate the board's strategic role in fund development and what a culture of philanthropy looks like in practice.
4. Recognize the full range of revenue sources available to non-profits and the board's role in supporting them, beyond events and grants.

Afternoon Session: Collaboration Between Organizations

Working across organizational boundaries takes intention, skill, and trust. In this half-day session, you'll explore what makes inter-organizational collaboration and partnerships succeed and what gets in the way. Through case studies, hands-on activities, and practical tools, you'll examine both the possibilities and the realities of working together. You'll leave with concrete strategies you can apply right away to strengthen collaboration, build stronger relationships, and achieve more together.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

1. Describe collaboration as a strategic approach for non-profits.
2. Assess your organization's readiness and fit for collaboration with others.
3. Identify what's needed to collaborate effectively with other organizations, including practical tips and tools.

Your Facilitator

Maria Turnbull (she/her) is Associate Executive Director at Vantage Point and brings over 25 years of leadership experience in staff and board roles across the non-profit sector in Canada and the UK. She is an accomplished facilitator and consultant specializing in governance, organizational development, strategic and operational planning, and practical HR and management systems that help organizations strengthen impact and alignment.

With an MBA from INSEAD and a BA in International Relations from UBC, Maria has advised organizations ranging from small teams to those with multi-million-dollar budgets, and has supported hundreds of non-profits across subsectors including health, housing, social services, arts and culture, education, and sport.

Maria is a current Board Member and Governance Committee Chair with the Bowen Island Health Care Foundation, and former Chair of Potluck Café Society and the Bowen Island Montessori School. She lives on Bowen Island (Nex̱wlélex̱m) with her husband and two teenage sons and occasionally finds time for her other passions: skiing, cycling, travelling, and sailing.
