Prince George, B.C. – The City of Prince George has a new and improved Active Transportation Plan (ATP) to encourage walking, cycling, rolling, and other human-powered modes of transportation throughout the community. At Wednesday night’s meeting, Council approved the updated plan which aims to guide long-term strategic direction for the next 20 years.

The plan outlines 18 action items that are split between four themes: connect, integrate, enable, and encourage. Actions include enhancing and improving the City’s trail network, providing more bicycle parking, and supporting programs and community initiatives to promote active transportation. The plan also includes prioritized lists and maps of proposed pedestrian and cycling improvement projects that were largely informed by public engagement.

The ATP was developed over 12 months through technical analysis, alignment with existing municipal, regional, and provincial policies and plans, and input from community members, interest groups, and agency partners through two rounds of engagement. Engagement included more than 45 open house attendees, more than 22 community/agency partners, 1,019 comments on the virtual map, and 400 survey responses.

The ATP highlights three primary funding and delivery mechanisms:

  1. Establish a capital program for implementing ATP projects.
  2. Explore the Subdivison and Development Servicing Bylaw to ensure future developments include Active Transportation with new sidewalks, bike lanes, walkways etc.
  3. Ensure all City roadway projects incorporate best practices in active transportation and accessible design.

Moving forward, individual capital expenditures will be brought forward for council approval during annual budget deliberations.
