Explore local trails to mark PG’s 106th birthday on Saturday
Here is a fun Friday fact! The City of Prince George has one kilometre of trail for outdoor-loving locals to enjoy for every year the City has existed as a municipality. That is 106 kilometres of trail through beautiful parks and northern scenery for each of the 106 years since the City’s incorporation in 1915.
Although people have lived here in the traditional territory of the Lheidli T’enneh for much longer, Saturday, March 6, is the City’s 106th anniversary. And due to the fact that trails are more popular than ever during the pandemic and the weather this weekend looks to be relatively mild, the City is encouraging residents to mark the occasion by venturing out to explore a few of the 106 kilometres we have at our boot-tips.
Residents can walk, ride a bike, or snow shoe outdoors with a friend or family member they don’t live with - provided they can maintain a safe physical distance.
Popular trails to navigate include the Cranbrook Hill Greenway, Forests for the World, and the UNBC Connector. Residents can visit www.princegeorge.ca/trails to pick a trail to visit, and head out there this weekend!
Remember:
- Practice physical distancing and visit trails only with your “safe six”/”family bubble”
- Obey trail signs. Stay to the right on a trail and pass on the left.
- Dress for the weather.
- Watch out and be ready for natural hazards like falling tree branches, uneven or slippery trails, etc. There is limited trail maintenance during the winter months.
- Always be on the alert for wildlife. Make noise, travel in groups, and never approach or feed wildlife. Report any bear sightings to the BC Conservation Office at 1-877-952-RAPP (7277).
