FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Prince George, B.C. – The City of Prince George will commence a construction project on the intersection of 5th Avenue and Burden Street in two weeks.

The intersection will be closed to traffic and pedestrians for two weeks starting on April 29 to May 10. Traffic will be redirected down Carney Street for eastbound travellers and down Alward Street for westbound traffic.

The project will be to replace a valve on the 500mm (20”) transmission water main, repairing the sanitary sewer main and remove the concrete valve chamber located in the intersection. Valves are used to control and isolate the flow of water through pipes. This valve in the chamber on 5th Avenue is no longer operational and the City needs to reestablish control along this transmission water main. This valve is particularly important for control further down the transmission main and other water main branching off in the area.

This work may affect water pressure in the area while work is underway but there are no full water outages expected for any residents or businesses. Residents in the immediate area may notice dirty water which is normal as sediment is stirred up through the watermains during this type of maintenance work. If you experience this, please run cold water only through an unfiltered tap such as a bathtub or outside faucet until water clears up.

The budget allocated for this work is $400,000 funded through the Water Distribution System Renewal budget.

The City is asking people to exercise caution in and around the work zone and pay attention to signage and directions from the construction crew. Please use alternate routes during construction.
