Annual reports on show

There were plenty of positives highlighted in each report, with tourism supporting 37 total events in 2024 that drove visitors to Prince George and supported four newly created events.
The library also showed that yearly visits were up for 2024, with a total number of 191,169 visits, borrowing numbers (digital and physical) were also up on previous years as were website visits.
Annual reports were also presented from the Downtown Prince George Business Improvement Association, Gateway Business Improvement Area Society and the Northern Sports Centre.
CN centre 30th celebration supported
Council approved spending of up to $15,000 for the 2025 Council Contingency Fund to support the CN Centre 30th anniversary event, scheduled for September 28.
The report provided council with a plan for the event, which includes a stage with live music, public skating (including free skate rentals), food and beverage, and more, all free of charge.
In addition to celebrating this anniversary, administration is proposing to incorporate two other important celebrations into this event. The City’s annual “International Students Welcome” and “Volunteer Appreciation Event”.
Special Olympics bid enters next phase
Council supported a request from administration to allow $30,000 from the Major Events Reserve Fund in cash and in-kind support for the site visit activities scheduled in October 2025 to promote the City of Prince George to be selected as the host City for the 2030 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games.
At the February 24 meeting, Council approved a request from administration to submit a bid for the 2030 games. The staff report explained that the economic impact of the 2030 Summer Games will be more than $8 million for the City and more than $12.5 million across the country.
Together with Tourism Prince George and an internal committee, City staff prepared and submitted the bid and have received the news the bid has successfully moved to the next phase, which includes the site visit for Special Olympics Canada representatives. The successful community will be announced later this year.
