Airport cannabis retail application passes first and second reading
City Council approved for first and second reading a rezoning application to establish a retail outlet run by Thrive Cannabis at the Prince George Airport (YXS) to sell cannabis. The application will now proceed to third reading and a public hearing to be held in front of Council at a future date.
Strategic Plan approved
City manager Walter Babicz presented Council with its strategic plan for 2022 to 2024. A strategic planning workshop was held in the fall of 2021 to provide Council with the opportunity to review the City’s existing plans and policies and discuss current priorities. Administration worked with a facilitator to review the emerging themes and Council priorities, and to highlight those items in a Strategic Plan document to help ensure Administration and the public have a clearer picture of what the City’s priority focus areas are for the next few years. Council approved the Plan.
City bidding for the 2025 Special Olympics in BC
City Council approved a proposal for the City to submit a bid to host the 2025 Special Olympics in BC. The bid will involves a direct financial commitment of up to $35,000 and up to $65,000 of in-kind commitments to be funded through the Major Events Reserve. Approximately 1,400 athletes and coaches, along with hundreds of friends and family, journey from all over the province and the Yukon to the host community for the BC Special Olympics Summer Games. The City believes that successfully hosting the Special Olympics in 2025 could result in over a million dollars in economic benefit and position the City to host a Winter Canadian Special Olympics Games in the near future.
Chief and Deputy Chief Election Officers appointed
City Council approved the appointment of Maureen Connelly as Chief Election Officer and Joan Switzer as Deputy Chief for the General Local Election on October 15, 2022. Administration will be undertaking a review of election-related bylaws and other procedure and guideline documents for any updates that need to be made because of changes in legislation and procedures. Any proposed amendments will be returned to Council for consideration in the next two to three months.
