The objective of the Sport PG Hosting Grant is to provide funding to registered not-for profits’ local sport organizations that host multi-day sporting events that draw participants and visitors to Prince George to benefit the local economy
- Applications are open January first come first serve & are reviewed & awarded on an ongoing basis for that calendar year
- Based on participant numbers, applicants may be eligible up to $6,000 for regional and provincial events or up to $8,000 for national or international sporting events
- Grants are based on conditional approval and are available until the budget is depleted for that year
- The amount available in 2025 to allocate for this stream is $75,000
Before completing a grant application, please ensure the sporting event meets grant criteria and eligibility requirements
Grant criteria
- A local sport organization hosting multiday Sporting Events
Eligibility requirements for applicant
- Applicant must be a registered non-profit society
- Events must be within the City of Prince George Boundary
- If your proposed event is held at a City venue (park, arena, facility, plaza etc.) you are required to confirm the booking using the City’s venue booking process
- Be in good financial standing with the City of Prince George. (organizations with outstanding receivables with the City are ineligible)
Eligibility requirements for event
- Event needs to be confirmed (not in bid phase)
- Be a sporting event that takes place over more than one day and incorporates at least two days of competitions
- Be able to track participant numbers
- If regional or provincial in scope, must demonstrate at least 50% out-of-town participation
- If national, or international in scope, must demonstrate at least 65% out-of-province participation
- Be a small to mid-sized sporting event that does not require substantial Hosting Right Fees, multi-sport games coordination, or financial guarantees.
Sport PG Hosting Grant eligible expenses
- First aid attendant fees
- Officials and referee fees
- Honorariums, awards (medals, plaques, trophies)
- Award ceremony (dinner, dance expenses etc.)
- Marketing and promotional expenses
- Minor Capital, including sporting equipment (less than 20% of total funding costs)
- Admin Fee (up to 15% of total budget requested)
Sport PG Hosting Grant will NOT fund
- For-profit businesses
- Events that have already occurred
- On-going operational expenses
- Unconfirmed events (including those still in the bid stage)
- Payment of City property taxes
- Professional development (e.g. conference registration fees, travel accommodations etc. see Capacity Building Grant)
- Funding to further offset rental fees for City-owned facilities is not eligible, as these rentals are already at a discounted rate for non-profits
- Major sporting events (see major sport event program- which requires City Council Approval)
Sport PG Hosting Grant ineligible expenses
- Major capital projects, including construction, upgrades of facilities for staging sporting events etc.
- Fundraising campaigns
- Prize monies – while offering prize money does not make an organization ineligible to apply, Sport PG funds cannot be allocated toward prize money
- Alcohol- you cannot use Sport PG funds to purchase or provide alcohol

- Conditionally approved upon meeting criteria & eligibility outlined in application. Reimbursement upon proof of number of participants (upon completion of reporting)
- Notification of both successful and unsuccessful applicants sent to the email address provided on the application form and cheque sent out to the mailing address provided on your organizations profile

- Until grant budget is depleted
- Grant budget is reset in January of each year

Adjudication team composition
- Completed by administration.
- Approved upon meeting grant criteria & eligibility. On a first come first serve basis until grant budget is depleted. Grant budget is reset in January of each year.
Funding considerations
Adjudication reviews applications using a scoring matrix based on overall alignment with the grant criteria and eligibility requirements. Additional considerations may include:
- Number of applications received
- Total amount requested from all applicants
- Budget available to allocate to all applications
