OCP resolutions response

Council received a report back from administration responding to the resolutions passed at the April 9 and 16, 2025 Special Council Meetings in relation to the Official Community Plan (OCP) review.

At those April meetings, Council passed 33 resolutions based on feedback received through the public hearing for staff to respond to regarding the proposed OCP.

Council went through all the resolutions, asked questions and considered the feedback on items including urban containment boundary changes, rezoning for Ginter’s Meadow and fire resiliency.

Administration will now make the updates to the draft OCP and following this another public hearing will be needed, likely in September, to provide residents the opportunity to comment on the amended version.

Garbage truck replacement

Council approved a budget amendment of $750,000 funded from the Solid Waste Reserve to support replacement of an existing automated solid waste collection truck.

In May 2024 one of the City’s garbage trucks was involved in a serious motor vehicle accident on Foothills Blvd that resulted in the unit being written off by ICBC. The report to council explained the City has received $375,000 from the insurance recovery but the funds from insurance do not cover the full cost of a new replacement collection unit so the remaining funds would need to come from the Solid Waste Reserve.

The wait period for delivery of a new collection vehicle is approximately 12-18 months once the purchase process is complete.

2026 Olympic trials financial support

Council supported a request from administration to allow $40,000 from the Major Events Reserve Fund to support The Caledonia Nordic Ski Club who will be hosting the official Canadian Olympic Cross Country Ski trials at their facility from December 10 – 16, 2025.

This is a high profile, prestigious and official Olympic Canada event, which will see Cross Country skiing athletes from across the Country vying to make the final team and represent Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. There will be approximately 250 athletes due to participate and this is the first time Olympic trials of any sport have been held in Prince George.

Committee of the Whole decisions

Council approved the Committee of the Whole recommendation made at the June 25, 2025 Committee of the Whole Meeting.

There were three resolutions that were approved at the Committee of the whole meeting, one was to meet with the Exploration Place administration regarding a long-term operating agreement for the Little Prince and to report back to Council by the end of 2025, the second was to move the Rainbow Park Washroom upgrade project from unfunded capital for consideration in the 2026 funded capital plan.

The third was to refer the “Heritage Sign Revitalization Project”, with an estimated budget of up to $106,000 for consideration in the 2026 budget as either a capital project or one-time enhancement to the Planning and Development operating financial plan.

Social Services Connector Event

Council approved a Notice of Motion that directs administration to hold a ‘Social Services Connector Event’ in the late Summer, and $2,500 will be made available for the event from the Council Contingency fund.

The purpose of the event as explained in the motion is to increase connectivity between social services groups, including government agencies and non-profits, as well as to show appreciation for the challenging work undertaken by this sector.
