FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Prince George, B.C. – The City of Prince George reminds residents that cats are not allowed to roam within City limits as the Prince George Humane Society is overflowing with cats and kittens.

The responsible animal ownership bylaw states that no pet may roam off-leash in any area other than the pet owner's residence or a designated off-leash area. Roaming cats can cause damage to neighbouring properties and the environment, as well as face dangers from traffic and predators.

“The Humane Society has reached capacity for cats and has asked our animal control division to temporarily pause intake until they can transfer animals to other rescues across the province. This leaves us in a difficult spot, especially when the City gets frequent calls to pick up trapped cats,” said bylaw services manager, Kent MacNeill.

“Cat owners are urged to keep their pets indoors at all times. Cats found roaming are considered an animal at large and may be subject to a $150 fine.”

The Humane Society was awarded the City’s animal shelter contract and began operations in 2025. The society runs stray animal intakes, redemptions, and adoption services for cats and dogs out of the City-owned shelter on Landsdowne Road while its original location on First Avenue is the home for cat adoptions and humane education.

“We have taken in more than 216 cats over the past two months between our two locations, and we are now at full capacity,” said PG Humane Society executive director, Angela McLaren.

“We urgently need foster and adoptive homes to help care for these animals. The Humane Society strongly encourages all pet owners in the community to have their pets spayed or neutered. These procedures not only help reduce the number of homeless animals at risk of neglect, illness, or euthanasia, but also play a critical role in managing free-roaming animal populations and related health concerns.”
